Project Description:

The 26,000 square-foot facility and adjacent 104-acre nature preserve helped the YMCA expand its educational environmental offerings in addition to the more traditional programs. The large environmental classroom gives direct access to the trail and outdoor spaces, facilitating study and exploration, while the trail system, amphitheater, and outdoor classroom extend the scope of typical programming.

This environmentally friendly facility exceeds energy efficiency standards by about 15 percent. Green features also include a stormwater management plan, indoor air quality plan, native plantings, use of local and recycled materials, and recycling of 75 percent of construction waste material.

“The Apple Creek location is really a dream come true for so many people. From an environmental educator’s viewpoint, it just doesn’t get much better than this.”

Shane Vondracek, YMCA Director of Environmental Education
