Project Description:

The addition and remodeling of the existing Middle School nearly triples the size of the original building, and now includes students from fifth through eighth grade. The addition includes a special wing for fifth and sixth graders to minimize interaction with older students. The shift of fifth graders to the Middle School alleviated crowding issues at the elementary school.

Sustainable design and construction decisions paid off: the school will save nearly $85,000 annually due to reduced energy consumption as a result of the high-performance building envelope, natural day lighting, exterior sun shelves to avoid heat gain, daylight sensors, energy efficient lighting system, reduced need for hot water, and a high-performing HVAC system, which includes a geothermal heating and cooling system and an energy control system.

Low-emitting materials were used to enhance indoor air quality, and special consideration was given to materials that have a high recycle content or were harvested/manufactured regionally. Also, more than 77% of the construction waste was diverted from the landfill through recycling.
