Completion: April 2015

Project Description:

The flood of 2008 displaced many of the student-focused offerings in the IMU. The goal of this project was to recover the home for the many displaced student services and provide protection from future flooding. Work inside focused mainly on the Ground Floor, with minor work on the first floor. The ‘Ground Floor’ has historically been dedicated to services for students. The work restored the student hub to its former center of activities, providing:

  • Iowa Hawk Shop / Book Store
  • IMU Learning Commons, lounge spaces, study carrels, and
  • tables
  • Academic Resource Center
  • Hills Bank and Trust on-campus bank
  • Union Station Food Court
  • The Hawkeye Room student lounge and performance venue
  • Convenience store
  • The Java House coffee shop

Outside, all four sides were steeled against future flooding by the installation of permanent and temporary flood walls. The IMU remained open during the entire project.
