Owner: City of Iowa City
Size: 7,990 SF
Completion: December 2008
Architect / Engineer: Rohrbach Associates PC
Awarded Gold LEED Certification

Project Description:

This 3-bay facility serves six full-time employees with private dormitories for six, a kitchen, a living room, a fitness area, and a lounge. Because the new station is now 50 percent larger than the old station, it can comfortably house a variety of equipment and vehicles as well.

The facility incorporated environmentally friendly solutions like its geothermal heating and cooling system. In addition, many of the materials used in the new building are made from recycled materials. To save even more energy, the lights in the facility work on motion sensors that turn on when one enters or moves about a room, or photoelectric sensors that judge whether or not light is needed in a room. The same system that operates the lighting also turns on the fire alarm and turns off the grill, the fireplace, and the kitchen stove, in case the firefighters are called out of the station.
