Project Overview
In response to the community’s need for childcare, the Viroqua Area Schools administration and school board found an opportunity to assist the community by converting an existing building into an early learning center (ELC).
The district purchased a former assisted living facility with district funds, and with one-time federal assistance and available grants, was able to cover the purchase and renovation of the structure using taxes levied using Fund 80, a funding mechanism which can only be used by community facilities that are not solely supporting district instruction.
Renovations of the one-story building encompassed minor demolition, wall revisions, finishes, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical upgrades. In addition to classrooms, the center also includes multipurpose, resource, conference, and staff break and work rooms; reception area, directors’ offices, laundry, kitchen, mother’s room, and a separate space for children to receive services such as occupational and physical therapy.
