A day in the life of a Miron risk manager: Shawn Becker

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a member of the Miron team? Below is some insight into what makes our team members tick.

Shawn Becker | Cedar Rapids, Iowa

What is a typical day at Miron Construction like for you?
I spend the day visiting project sites, completing audits, conducting safety training/classes and attending meetings.

What is the best part of your day?
The best part of the day is when I know that everyone has gone home safely with all 10 fingers and toes. You know it was a good day then.

What is the most challenging part of your day?
Teaching old dogs new tricks. Safety now is not what it was years ago, and some people think they can still do what they have always done.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you started your career in risk?
Some people just won’t change, no matter what you say to them or how you say it. Some habits are just too hard to break and we are creatures of habit.

What projects are you most proud of?
I am proud of all my projects; we made it almost two full years without a recordable injury! I thank ALL our crew members for their hard work and dedication to safety.

On average, how many sites do you visit per day?
I visit four to five sites per day. I am pretty lucky as most of my current sites are located in the Iowa City area.

What is something you would say the general public does not know about the construction industry?
Before the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was created 43 years ago, an estimated 14,000 workers were killed on the job every year. Today, workplaces are much safer and healthier; the industry has gone from 38 fatal injuries a day to 12.

Where do you see the industry going in the future?
Fatality trends have certainly decreased over the years since OSHA was created. Hopefully they will continue to decrease as in years past.

Fun fact/interesting talent:
I am a closet karaoke singer, but don’t tell anyone. I also love landscaping. I recently built a pond in my backyard complete with a waterfall, goldfish, and koi.

How do you spend your free time?
I spend most of my free time with family and friends. I also coach most of my boys’ sports teams.

Favre, Rodgers or other?
I have always been a 49ers fan. Go Colin Kaepernick!

What is one thing you can’t live without?
Air. That was an easy one.
