Miron Construction Co., Inc. Awarded University of Iowa Art Building Replacement Facility

Cedar Rapids, IowaMiron Construction Co., Inc. was recently awarded the Art Building Replacement Facility project, with a contract valued at approximately $51 million, for the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa.

The new five-story, approximately 128,000-square-foot structure, will be concrete frame construction supported on drilled pier foundations. The building envelope will be clad with zinc and stainless steel plate panels, channel glass wall systems, operable windows, and a green roof. The interior will boast a wide range of finishes including, but not limited to: exposed Class “A” concrete walls and ceilings, polished concrete, tile, cork, carpet, various acoustical finishes, wood paneling, and decorative and formed metals.

The facility, expected to be completed in mid-2016, designed by Steven Holl Architects in collaboration with BNIM Architects, will replace the 1936 Art Building Facility, which was heavily damaged during a flood of the U of I campus in June 2008. It will provide studio space for ceramics, sculpture, metals, photography, printmaking, painting and drawing, and 3D multimedia. It will also include space for graduate and undergraduate student studios, faculty and staff offices, and gallery exhibit space.
