On June 29, 2017, Miron Construction Co., Inc. hosted a two-day class at its Wausau branch for seven Wisconsin teachers focused on renewable energy education. The class, “Doable Renewables: Renewable Energy Education in the Classroom,” is a graduate-level course for K-12 teachers offered by the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP), a program of the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education within UW-Stevens Point’s College of Natural Resources.

The course was taught by Jeanine Gelhaus, a middle school science teacher from Medford, and focused on ways to integrate hands-on activities into various subject areas to get students actively learning about renewable energy and the importance of energy in our lives. Each teacher received KEEP’s Renewable Energy Education Supplement designed for teachers to use in their classrooms. The course also included a tour of Miron led by Tim Andrew, vice president of northern operations.

“Sustainability is one of Miron’s key corporate drivers so we were honored to host this event. Promoting the importance of sustainability to our next generation of leaders will be vital in ensuring that our world, and those within it, continue to thrive,” said Theresa Lehman, director of sustainable services for Miron.

As a result of participating in this class, teachers will:

  • develop an understanding that renewable energy technology works and is currently being used in Wisconsin and around the world;
  • gain knowledge about, and hands-on experiences in, renewable energy education;
  • develop strategies for using the renewable energy supplement and resources to integrate renewable energy concepts into their curriculum; and
  • learn about and appreciate the economic, environmental, and socio-political benefits of using renewable energy.
