Human Connection is Crucial for Workplace Wellness

Miron’s wellness coordinator, Meredith Baciak, focuses on creating a multi-chapter journey of wellbeing growth for Miron employees. Her approach creates human connection and helps to combat the stigma of mental health issues, all with the goal of strengthening the five essentials for workplace mental health and wellbeing: protection from harm, opportunity for growth, mattering at work, work-life harmony, and connection & community.

A recent study ranked construction as the #1 industry for deaths by suicide. With a suicide rate that is four times greater than the national average, the leaders at Miron knew we all needed to learn more about what plagues our people, how we can support them, and how we can stop these preventable deaths.

Meredith became a certified instructor of the QPR Institute, and since then has trained more than 350 Miron employees to know the signs of suicidal ideation.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer. Just as people trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Both CPR and QPR are part of systems designed to increase the chance of survival in the event of a crisis.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we applaud the efforts of our team for addressing mental health issues and suicide as a top health and safety priority. Together we can change and save lives.
