The new City of Cedar Rapids Public Works facility replaces the flood-damaged Public Works Facility, which sat in a different configuration on the same property. The new office building and operations warehouse was built in two different phases using FEMA funds. The office building construction began in the fall of 2012 and was completed in the summer of 2013. The operations warehouse construction begain in fall of 2013 and was completed in fall of 2014. The building is 400,000 square feet, 60,000 square feet of which is office space for public works, solid waste and recycling, building services, parks and recreation, city assessor, fleet services, information technology, and wellness and safety.
This new facility improved traffic flow within the building and throughout the site, supports the most efficient layout for operations, and brings the building up to current code standards. The cost benefits of the new facility include increases in operational efficiencies by consolidating all operations under one roof, allows for better maintenance and washing of equipment to extend working life, and reduces staff time spent maneuvering vehicles within the building.
